¡¡¡AMUNT ALTEA!!!

‘The Tempest’
Every single soul that came to this match can look themselves in the mirror and be proud, as while there were other attractions on TV (and a roof over their head) both the fans of Altea and Javea turned out in force to watch a thrilling encounter writes Matthew Bell. Particular mention should be made of Mike Smith and his Javeamigos whom had to travel down to the game, but as is their wont they did so and supported their team for the full 90 minutes. Maybe Altea should enlist some of the amigos as their passionate and enthusiastic support acted as something of a jump start to the occasionally supine Garganes support. Whereas last year’s encounter had been a one-sided affair, Altea deserved this win, although Javea have improved markedly from last year and the result would have been a lot closer if the visitors had not been suffering from a raft of injuries.
Altea entered the game on the back of three awful defeats but played like a wounded animal, and whatever under-fire coach Carrete had said in the dressing room, the message reached his players in double quick time. With just three minutes on the clock midfield anchorman Marin won a terrific tackle in his own half and threaded the ball through for Angel to chase. What happened next will be talked over in Costa Blancan bars for many a year as the linesman waved for offside, and crucially Javea stopped in their tracks. Angel, however, charged on, skipped around ‘keeper Ortola and whipped over a cross for Nene to convert (1-0, 3 mins). Not surprisingly, protests started, Ortola put the ball down for a free kick while the referee decided to chat with the linesman and promptly over-rule him and allow the goal to stand before brandishing red cards at the Javea bench. In the meantime a minor hurricane had arrived, leaving snow on the hills and rain hitting the loyal fans horizontally. Both teams coped admirably given the conditions, but Altea just seemed to have the edge in the use of it. Both Javi & Alex Cuadrado were working the Altean back line as hard as they could, but the absence of their playmaker Ruben Pla, was a crucial factor. The conditions were a goalkeeper’s nightmare, but both custodians performed very well, and as the half wore on, Altea’s number one, Tomas, had to react sharply to a couple of excellently worked Javea dead ball situations.
The second half started with the visiting Javeamigos placing needles in effigies of the referee, whom from my angle was faultless in that every decision went to the home side, and for Javea to gain a free kick a blunt instrument would have been needed. Carrete had switched his formation to one striker and two defensive midfielders (England fans might wish to get used to this…), and it was proving a tough task for Javea to break the defensive wall down. Raul had been introduced to replace Pascual on the right hand side and worked tirelessly, although his final ball could be erratic. The system was giving Chole more freedom (maybe Carrete reads these reports…), and given time he plays as someone from la Tercera. Exactly this would happen on the hour as Javea were ‘sucked in’ by Altea, and from Chole’s pass, Carrasco would sprint from the half way line, skip around Ortola and double Altea’s advantage. For many the game was now over, but credit to Javea and their manager Kenny Brown, as they fought back and would reduce the arrears (2-1, 66 mins) with a direct free kick which Tomas was slow to react to, but the visitors deserved their goal. Siege was now laid on the Altea goal, but Christian and Bazaga were faultless as ever and reduced chances to a minimum. The game was being played at great pace and skill given the monsoon conditions, and from one Altea counter attack, Angel was tripped as he entered the penalty area only for Carrasco to miss from the penalty spot which makes three this season, at this rate Tomas will be entrusted with these duties. The three points would stay with Altea putting them in joint top spot, although their next game is not until January 16th. For all UD Altea information in the meantime log onto the unofficial website

TROFEO PIMPOLLO – This prestigious prize is shared between the excellence of Chole and the non-stop support of the Javeamigos to their team.
